About

Carolyn Rahaman, writer

Carolyn writes fantasy about poisoning oak trees for love spells and firebirds who won't text you back.

She grew up in Austin, then moved to Chicago and never left.

Back in the day she was an astrophysicist, looking at gamma rays and drinking in South America.  She private tutored math, physics, and ACT prep, but liked teaching Algebra and Calculus best.  Now she is her church treasurer, and someday she will write a wacky comedy about church council meetings, because they are fabulous.

She has a Kindergartner, who is doing school remotely and knows too much math for a five-year-old.

She is represented by the amazing Alyssa Jennette of Stonesong Literary.

Why is it called Twenty Percent True?

My writing comes from attempts to understand my granddad's tall tales.  Their structure, their style, their pacing, their content.  His stories were amazing, but were probably only 20% true.  Yet they got at the truth of his character, his history, and his priorities in a way that arrived at a deeper truth.

About the Book Reviews

"If you don't have time to read," the tag used here for book reviews, is from On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King.
"If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write."
I read to learn, and then I try to report what I learned here.  I'm not saying that if you don't have time to read the book, you could read me ramble about it an be good to go.

About the Craft Posts

These are mostly ramblings of what I'm thinking about or struggling with or trying that week.

They are not meant to be authoritarian or even well researched.
