This story's setting sent me searching my shelves for a novella by Nicholas Monsarrat called "The Time Before This." I vaguely remembered what the novella was about, but I had vivid memories of its descriptions of ice, buried somewhere deep in the story. It's set near and on Bylot Island -- off the northern end of Baffin Island in what is now called Nunavut Territory, Canada. Turns out there's even a glacier lobe there called "The Mothership". ---- Anyway, found the book and it's waiting for an after-supper read.
